Tourmaline
Tourmaline is a fine stone displaying a broad spectrum of nuances, whence its name, derived from the Sinhalese word tōra-molli, “multi-colored stone.” Charmed by its infinite medley of tones, Van Cleef & Arpels uses tourmaline mostly for High Jewelry creations.

Tourmaline exhibits several different colors depending on the angle of observation.
Imported to Europe from Sri Lanka in the early 18th century, the stone exhibits several different colors depending on the angle of observation. The most sought-after varieties of tourmaline include rubellite, which stands out for an intense raspberry-red hue, and Paraiba tourmaline. The latter, unique for its vibrant, lustrous blue color, features the characteristics of stones taken from the Paraiba mine in Brazil. Another distinctive variety, “watermelon” tourmaline displays unexpected gradations of color, evolving from red to green.
Van Cleef & Arpels experts strive to select stones of great purity, presenting bright and harmonious colors and apt to bestow the most exquisite sheen on jewelry creations.
To protect this stone and preserve its unique color, Van Cleef & Arpels recommends storing it out of direct sunlight and away from sources of heat.
